Getting Help

Friends and Family Members

Family members of alcoholics and drug addicts are welcome to call Friendly House to learn about our program. If your loved one is ready for help, Friendly House is there for her. All we require is an honest desire to stop substance abuse.

It is important to understand that alcoholism and drug addiction are diseases, just as is asthma or diabetes. Anyone, from any background, can be an alcoholic or drug addict. Although there is no cure, there is treatment. It is said that alcohol or drug abuse is a family disease because it affects every member of the family.

If your loved one is not ready to admit that she has a problem, quite simply, there is not much you can do. Efforts to try to force her to admit to her addiction may cause more problems. If this is the case, you can help by educating her about addiction and how it is hurting her and her family. Encourage her to find treatment. Remember that you are not responsible for her addiction.

Take steps to take care of yourself whether or not your family member chooses to get help. Many family members and friends find encouragement and support from organizations such as Al-Anon or Alateen. Consider attending a group meeting or joining an online chat group for support.

Donate to Friendly House

Friendly House is solely supported by private donations and grants, by the fundraising efforts of the Board of Directors, Grateful Hearts (former residents of Friendly House), our annual awards luncheon, and other special events.
