A Special Tribute

Carrie White wrote this poem in honor of Friendly House nearly 20 years ago.  The poem appeared in the tribute journal for Friendly House's first annual awards luncheon and now appears on the wall at Normandie House for all to share.  Carrie White is currently a member of the Friendly House Board of Directors.

the miracle

I love Friendly House. I owe my life to Friendly House. Eighteen years ago, I was broken and hopeless, full of shame and self-hatred. I have personally experienced the unique brand of love, compassion, structure and nurturing that is the magic of Friendly House. I know, first-hand, the metamorphosis that happens there. Friendly House has the power to heal souls and mend hearts. Being able to watch the women come through the house after me, get well and go on to live productive, happy lives has been pure joy.

“I came to Friendly House a broken woman. The first words I heard Peggy say, ‘Let me love you until you can love yourself,’ were exactly the words I needed to hear to get my life back on track. I simply didn’t know how to stop drinking. The staff showed me the way to freedom and happiness staying sober one day at a time. I owe my life to Friendly House.”

“As a former resident, I remain loyal to the house, lead round-table discussions, sponsor women and continue as a member of Grateful Hearts so I can show current residents that the road of sobriety can be sustained through strength and dignity, through working the steps and keeping commitments. I encourage all who walk through the doors of this fabulous house to follow the path I have taken for the past 23 years to a brighter today.”

“I am so lucky to have been welcomed into the house with open arms and unconditional love. I had nowhere else to go. I am learning to repair the relationships my years of drugging and drinking harmed. Friendly House is teaching me to make healthy choices in every area of my life.”
